Rec Coach Curriculum

U14 Curriculum

7v7 · 1-2-3-1 · 75-minute sessions · 10 weeks

Coaching U14 rec means coaching teenagers, and teenagers can tell in one session whether you respect them — talk to them like young adults, let them compete hard, and hand them real decisions instead of instructions. Your roster will span kids who have played for years and kids brand new to the game, so every week here gives you an easier and a harder version of the same practice. Win the belonging battle — teens keep showing up for teams where they feel needed — and the soccer takes care of itself.

What this season builds toward

  • Technical consistency under pressure — a first touch, pass, and dribble that still work when a real defender arrives.
  • Break lines on purpose — players spotting and playing the forward pass that cuts through the other team, not just the safe sideways ball.
  • Defend and press together — connected from the striker back in the 7v7 1-2-3-1, with recovery sprints when beaten.
  • Leadership and ownership — players talk, organize, answer questions, and by Week 10 run pieces of the session themselves.
  • Everyone belongs — first-year players and experienced players both leave feeling needed, competitive, and wanting to come back.

Game day — 7v7 — the 1-2-3-1

Play a 1-2-3-1: one goalkeeper, two defenders, three midfielders, one forward. Manage the game simply — structure without overwhelm. Guide by asking questions instead of shouting instructions, coach movement off the ball, and encourage building out from the back with simple passes rather than kicking blind.

  • Defenders move up to half field on transitions instead of standing deep.
  • Midfielders spread wide and connect play, creating passing options.
  • The single forward stays high but works hard to defend from the front.
  • Build out from the back with simple passes — no purposeless booting.
Goalkeeper
Start the attack — throw or pass with purpose.
Defenders
Step up with the play; never camp on the back line.
Midfielders
Spread wide, connect the play, offer passing options.
Forward
Stay high, stretch the defense, press from the front.
