Dribbling & 1v1 attacking

BRAVE · March

Objectives — what the players will do

  1. 1Keep the ball close enough to touch it on every step
  2. 2Try a move — a fake, a cut, or a step-over — to beat a defender
  3. 3Change speed right after the move: slow, slow, FAST

Play 1 — starts when the second player arrives

Dribble Tag

Start the moment the second player arrives. Everyone dribbles inside a 20x20 grid while two taggers (no balls) hunt them. Tagged? Do five toe taps and jump back in. Swap taggers every minute so everyone gets both jobs — close control under pressure from the first minute.

Practice — the one taught activity of the night

1v1 Ladder to Mini Goals

The attacker dribbles at a defender who guards TWO mini goals a few yards apart — fake toward one, score in the other. Climb the ladder: rung one, the defender is frozen and the attacker just performs the "move of the week" at speed — the fake-and-go: dip your shoulder one way, push the ball the other. Rung two, the defender walks. Rung three, fully live. Run two or three channels at once so nobody stands in line, and let each player tell you which rung they are on.

Level down — if it breaks down

Drop back a rung to dribbling only — no defender at all, just the move at speed with the ball kept close on every step.

Level up — if it looks too easy

The defender goes fully live, and a goal scored after a real move counts double.

Play 2 — always finish playing the real game

4v4 — Beat One, Score Big

A goal counts double if the scorer's team beat someone 1v1 anywhere in the attack. Cheer the attempts as loudly as the goals — trying the move IS the win this week.

Key coaching points — in your own words

  • ·Can you touch the ball on every step, like it is tied to your shoe?
  • ·Can you fake one way and go the other?
  • ·What happens if you change speed right after your move?
  • ·Can you try that same move with your other foot?
  • ·This is the week to win your duel — can you beat the player in front of you?
Progress the session

Defenders get livelier each round, and attackers name the move they are about to try.

Regress the session

Keep every defender passive all night — confidence first, contests later.

Game-day focus — watch for this on Saturday

Bravery on the ball. Celebrate every attempt to beat a defender — even the ones that fail — and never groan at a lost ball. Keep the diamond wide so dribblers get real 1v1 space.

Message to forward to your parents

This week is all about BRAVERY — close dribbling feeding a move to beat a defender. Please cheer the attempt, not just the result — "I loved that you tried!" goes a long way. And let them show you their favorite move in the yard.

Prep the night before; copy the activity on the field.

Watch the night before to understand the idea

Watch before your first March session — this is the blueprint for a fun, high-touch practice that matches our Play-Practice-Play method. Lift the structure wholesale: arrive-and-play, short game-based activities, finish with the game. Layer the dribbling theme into every activity rather than coaching it in isolation.
