Objectives — what the players will do

  1. 1React the instant the ball changes teams — no freezing
  2. 2Chase to win the ball back within five seconds of losing it
  3. 3Go forward fast the moment we win it

Play 1 — starts when the second player arrives

Sharks & Minnows

Minnows dribble across the area while sharks (no balls) try to kick balls out. Lose your ball and you become a shark. The whole game is transition — one second you have it, the next you are hunting.

Practice — the one taught activity of the night

Win It, GO!

Two players face you a few yards apart. Roll a ball into the space between them and shout "GO!" — first one there attacks a mini goal, the other instantly becomes the defender. The whole skill is the switch: one second nobody has the ball, the next you are attacking or defending. Run two or three grids at once so reps come fast. For the last few minutes add "LOSE IT!": everyone dribbles, and on the call they abandon their ball and steal a different one as fast as they can.

Level down — if it breaks down

Roll the ball closer to one player so someone wins it quickly, and the other jogs back to defend.

Level up — if it looks too easy

Serve the ball bouncing so it takes a touch to control, and the player who loses the race chases at full speed.

Play 2 — always finish playing the real game

4v4 — Ten-Second Strike

When a team wins the ball, scoring within ten seconds earns a bonus point. Shout "GO! GO! GO!" on every turnover until reacting becomes automatic.

Key coaching points — in your own words

  • ·What do you do the very second the other team wins the ball?
  • ·Our 5 Second Rule — can you chase it back within five seconds of losing it?
  • ·Ball won! Do we stop and look backward, or go forward FAST?
  • ·Who reacted first on that turnover — and who froze?
Progress the session

Shorten play2's bonus window from ten seconds to seven.

Regress the session

Stretch the window to fifteen seconds and cue the reaction every time — the habit matters more than the speed.

Game-day focus — watch for this on Saturday

One thing Saturday: instant reactions when the ball changes teams. Cheer the sprint back after a lost ball as loudly as any goal, and cheer the fast break forward when we win it — and rotate everyone through the diamond as always.

Message to forward to your parents

This week is REACTING — what your child does in the instant the ball changes teams. Quick reaction games at home (tag, catch, first-to-the-cushion) all transfer straight to Saturday.

Watch the night before to understand the idea

A progression game that flips 1v1 into 1v2 and 2v2, so duel winners immediately face a harder problem. Run it in Week 3 when duels need stretching, and keep score to feed the fire — Win your duel starts here.

A drill you can copy on the field

A defending-and-attacking transfer game that hides chasing and pressing inside team play — an ideal final-week Play phase. Use it in Week 4 to check whether the chase-and-steal habits survive inside a real game, and celebrate every ball won back fast.
