Week 4 · U6
Transition: win it back fast, go forward fast
Objectives — what the players will do
- 1Attack fast the moment their team wins the ball
- 2Chase back fast the moment their team loses it
- 3React to "SWITCH!" without stopping to think
Play 1 — starts when the second player arrives
Ball Swap Scramble
Everyone dribbles anywhere with a ball. When the coach yells "SWAP!", leave your ball, sprint to a different ball, and keep dribbling — fastest swapper wins the round. Arriving kids grab a ball and join the very next swap.
Practice — the one taught activity of the night
Win It, Go!
Small areas with a little goal at each end. Two or three attackers keep the ball against one defender. The MOMENT the defender wins it, they attack the other goal as fast as they can — and the old attackers must chase back right away. Play short rounds in waves and swap the defender every go, so everyone feels both jobs: win it and GO, lose it and CHASE.
The coach is the only defender and moves in slow motion; celebrate any chase-back at all.
Count out loud how many seconds it takes to reach the goal after winning the ball — can they beat five? Then three?
Play 2 — always finish playing the real game
4v4 — Switch Goals
Normal games, but when the coach yells "SWITCH!", both teams attack the OTHER goal. The team that looks up and reacts fastest wins the moment. Sneak in one or two switches per game — the giggles are the point.
Key coaching points — in your own words
- ·We won the ball — GO fast the other way!
- ·We lost it — chase back right away!
- ·First thought after a steal: which goal am I attacking?
- ·React like a superhero, not a statue!
More switches, less warning — reactions have to get quicker.
Call "SWITCH!" slowly and point at the new goal while everyone catches up.
Game-day focus — watch for this on Saturday
Watch the moments the ball changes teams — do we react fast both ways? Everyone attacks, everyone defends, heads up in the diamond, rotate positions, and still no booting.
Message to forward to your parents
Transition week! We practiced racing the moment the ball changes teams — win it and go, lose it and chase. In the yard, play keep-away and shout "GO!" whenever someone steals it; watch how fast they flip.
This week's two videos
Prep the night before; copy the activity on the field.
SoccerCoachTV - 1v1 to 1v2 to 2v2 Attacking & Defending Game.
Watch the night before to understand the idea
A progression game that flips 1v1 into 1v2 and 2v2, so duel winners immediately face a harder problem. Run it in Week 3 when duels need stretching, and keep score to feed the fire — Win your duel starts here.
Watch on YouTubeSoccerCoachTV - Try this different Defending and Attacking game with your team.
A drill you can copy on the field
A defending-and-attacking transfer game that hides chasing and pressing inside team play — an ideal final-week Play phase. Use it in Week 4 to check whether the chase-and-steal habits survive inside a real game, and celebrate every ball won back fast.
