Playing out from the back

BUILD · August

Objectives — what the players will do

  1. 1Sprint into the build-out shape the moment our keeper gets the ball
  2. 2Play through the first line of pressure with short passes instead of booting
  3. 3Use the keeper as an extra passer when the press comes

Play 1 — starts when the second player arrives

Goal-Kick Starts

Split into two teams and play — but EVERY dead ball restarts as a goal kick with build-out rules: the other team drops off to halfway until the first pass is played. Just watch the first few: who finds a spot to help the keeper without being told? About 10-15 minutes.

Practice — the one taught activity of the night

Shape on the Whistle → Escape the Half

Half field. On the whistle, players sprint to their build-out spots: two defenders split WIDE of the goal, midfielders spread to the touchlines and middle, striker stretches high. Keeper passes to a split defender, who finds a midfielder — build past the halfway line under control for a point. After three clean builds, release two defenders to press the moment the keeper plays the first pass. Teach it like a fire drill: shape FIRST, then the ball moves. Roughly 25-30 minutes.

Level down — if it breaks down

Pressers must walk until the second pass — plenty of time to make the field big.

Level up — if it looks too easy

Release three pressers, or award two points for a build that goes through the middle player.

Play 2 — always finish playing the real game

Built Goals Double

Normal game with keepers and build-out restarts. Any goal that started with a successful build-out from the keeper counts double. Watch how quickly "boot it!" disappears when built goals are worth more. Last 20-25 minutes.

Key coaching points — in your own words

  • ·Can you make the field BIG before the ball moves?
  • ·Count their press — two came, so who is our free player?
  • ·Is a pass back to the keeper a retreat, or a restart?
  • ·Protect the badge — be brave with the ball near our own goal.
Progress the session

More pressers, released earlier, until building out feels like the real Saturday game.

Regress the session

No pressure at all — walk the pattern keeper → defender → midfielder until everyone knows their spot.

Game-day focus — watch for this on Saturday

Use the build-out line EVERY single time — the keeper never punts, the defenders split wide, and once we escape the press, the whole team steps up together. Mistakes near our goal are fine; kicking it blindly away is the only wrong answer.

Message to forward to your parents

We are learning to play out from the back — the bravest skill in youth soccer. There will be mistakes near our own goal on Saturday, and that is exactly how it is learned. Please cheer the brave pass, even when it goes wrong.
